The district device, explained

Your child's school iPad.
Now what?

You don't have to become an IT expert. Start with what the district offers, what the parent portal can actually show, and where to go when something doesn't look right.

First, is this a take-home school device?

For 2026-27, D97 says K–2 iPads stay in classroom carts, while grades 3–5 receive school-issued iPads. The information on this page is especially relevant to families whose children use their district devices at home.

Start with the basics

There are two different kinds of controls.

Aristotle K12 Parent

D97's parent portal for viewing certain activity from school-managed devices. Depending on district settings, parents may be able to set internet schedules or block websites outside school hours.

District-managed

Apple Screen Time

Apple's device-level controls. Families use them on personal iPhones and iPads. On school-owned iPads, available settings and permitted changes need to be confirmed with D97.

Device settings

Neither tool is a substitute for talking with children about how they use technology.

Step by step

How to get into Aristotle

D97's September 2026 Parent Portal Guide describes this process. The district's family technology update also says main contacts will receive onboarding information. If your family hasn't received access, here's where to start.

1

Check your district contact email

The guide says to verify that the correct primary email is on file with the school. If you're not sure, ask the Hatch office to confirm.

2

Look for the onboarding email

Check your inbox and spam folder for Aristotle or D97 portal information. If you can't find it or your account does not work, email helpdesk@op97.org and request access.

3

Complete registration

Use the registration link provided through the district's onboarding process. Don't share your portal password or your child's activity with others.

4

Look at the activity and available settings

Start with the daily or weekly view. Then explore the after-school internet settings, website lists, and notifications that appear in your account. Features can vary with D97's configuration.

One thing to check before presenting

D97's 2026-27 family update says families would be registered automatically, while the Parent Portal Guide also describes requesting access through the help desk. Nefret can confirm the current onboarding instructions with D97 IT.

What it can do

What parents may find in the portal

These features are listed in the official D97 Parent Portal Guide. Availability depends on the district's settings.

Usage views

Current and historical activity, daily or weekly totals, and time-period filters.

Home internet schedules

Possible curfews and connectivity controls outside school hours, subject to district configuration.

Website information

Reported websites, some browsing history, and potentially the ability to block specific sites.

Alerts and events

Some blocked-content events, flagged activity, and optional weekly summaries.

Read the report carefully

What does Aristotle actually see?

In its October 16, 2026 infographic, D97 separates activity into three groups. This is about activity reporting visibility, not a list of what your child is allowed to use.

Reported

Browser-based activity

Examples listed by D97:

  • Britannica
  • Destiny Discover
  • Gale and Kami
  • Nearpod and Zearn
Still in development

ClassLink integrations

Examples listed as pending:

  • Amplify
  • BrainPOP
  • Newsela
  • Savvas and ThinkLink
Not reported

Native app activity

Examples listed by D97:

  • Apple native apps
  • Google apps
  • Epic and Seesaw
  • Renaissance and TestNav

No activity showing does not always mean no activity happened.

Some apps are not visible to the portal. A report can be incomplete even while a child has been using the iPad. D97 also notes a Fall 2026 reporting exception for Renaissance Star assessments.

Real questions

A few things parents ask

Can I change filtering during school hours?

No. D97's portal guide says school-hours filtering is managed by the district. Families may have different options outside school hours.

Will Aristotle show activity from my family's personal iPad?

No. D97 says Aristotle Parent reports on district-managed devices only. For personal devices, start with Screen Time and family controls.

Why does a school app not appear in the activity report?

The district's October infographic explains that some native apps are not reported, and some ClassLink integrations are pending. This can affect what the parent sees even when the app is being used.

Do I need my child's Google sign-in at home?

D97's 2026-27 technology update says students need their district Google username and password to use the internet or internet-based apps on district devices away from D97 networks. For help with sign-in, contact technology@op97.org.

Who can fix an Aristotle account issue?

For access, the official Parent Portal Guide lists helpdesk@op97.org. Hatch PTO volunteers cannot grant access to student accounts.
